影片不乏锋利之处，家乐的野跟皮，一度令人难以接受。可以看到，《爸妈不在家》并没有尝试让他的个性发生扭转，事实上，那也是不可能的事情。家乐和Teresa就像被海洋分隔的岛屿，阴差阳错，被连接在了一起。这世间也并非只有许鞍华的桃姐情，萍水相逢，亦能有动人之处。所以，看到最后，当家乐猛然拿出剪刀，用稍嫌过火但又是孩子思维的方式去表示好感和爱意时。每到家乐爆发情绪，电影的镜头也随之运动起来，晃动不安，这种不安也能直接传递给观众，毫无障碍。电影还有一些巧妙的细节，像家乐买彩票，可以相信，如果不是导演的自身经历，那种由希望到失望的小瞬间是不会被记下的。因为，这根本就无法编撰。
