On summer holiday I’ve seen several American and British TV-series: sensuous True blood (vampire theme), exciting Babylon hotel which is an encyclopedic depiction of London life; and this one, which is my favorite ----the desperate romantics.
Art and passion are almost the most attracting and glamorous elements in my life. To some point, they are the source of my inspiration and the incentive of my endeavor. A place without art and passion is dreadful for me to live at. So you can understand my enthusiasm for this TV series.
I strongly recommend it to you not only due to my preference for it, but also because it tells us some truth of love and passion.
The hero and narrator of the TV series is the shy but sweet journalist. I have to mention that all the leading characters are so bloody handsome!!! The journalist is in love of the angelic model he recommended to his artistic friend---one of the three painters. But it was this painter who wins her heart and she died for him at last. “No art exists before it suffers.” By her death she became his beloved woman forever and completed her path to art.
The desperate romantics never stop seeking for new inspirations. Artists are born to love and create, so they are very likely to be burned by their own passions. They fall in love with their art rather than their lover. Frankly speaking, we all love ourselves more than the one we love. We love someone because he or she has something that we are always longing for.
The most handsome and selfish painter who married the most beautiful female in the series never cherished her. He married her to save her and his own reputation. How sad it is! Reputation is usually more important to women, but it is always men who care so much about it. All over the world there are so many brave women who are willing to die for love while the men are always so coward, selfish and childish. A friend of mine told me that for a man there are always things which are much more important than love. I do agree with him. Love is rarely the most important thing for a man, but it is usually everything for a woman. So the most charming and talented woman died for love while her man just grieved for some time and then lived happily ever after.
Another love story in this series is the relationship between the tall and shy painter and his partner who is a prostitute. He loves her a lot but he is always shamed of her identity and wants to make her into a lady. She became a lady for him but still cannot grasp his love. His pride and vanity stop him from marring her, so he asked her to disappear in his city. How selfish a man can be! When he needs a woman, he does everything to please her and change her into his taste; but when he does not want her, he escapes and betrays her in such a cruel way.
And for the reserved journalist, he is always too shy to chase the model he loved for so long. I have to say that sometimes a kind person is very likely to be defeated by an evil one. But we also have to admit that love story is sometimes written by god. The model and the libertine artist are made for each other and she is determined to love him at any cost. Destiny is just like this. That is why they are called desperate romantics.
